Very. The only way to survive a volcanic eruption is to be somewhere else.

Inactive volcanoes are safe enough, aside from the problem of stepping on razor-sharp rocks. It's the active ones that can kill you instantly. The most dangerous are the ones that explode in a cloud of ash-filled acidic steam; these volcanoes have killed tens of thousands of people in minutes.

Just last month (September, 2014) a few dozen hikers on a Japanese "inactive" volcano were killed when it suddenly erupted without warning.
