The Colorado River is the closest point of interest, as it lies at the bottom of the canyon. The Colorado Plateau is at the top, forming the "rim". At about 277 miles (446 km) long, as much as 18 miles (29 km) wide and as deep as 6,093 feet (1,857 meters), it is contained within and managed by several groups: Grand Canyon National Park, Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Havasupai people, and the Navajo Nation. It has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, and the Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a holy site, making pilgrimages to it. The first European to see it arrived in 1540.
