2,000 feet
The Homestake Mine in South Dakota reached depths of over 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) during its operation. It was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America before closing in 2002.
dig a very very very very very deep hole and hope there's gold somewhere in it.
857 metres below the surface, there is a wine cellar down there as well.
You have to mine pretty deep for diamonds (if that's what you're asking)
It can be both. Right now, the largest gold mine in Australia is an open pit mine. However, The Homestake mine in South Dakota was 8000 ft deep- an underground mine with 375 miles of passageways. It all depends on where the gold is located.
Deep Mine
Gold can be found at varying depths in the Earth's crust, typically ranging from a few meters to a few kilometers deep. Commercially viable gold deposits are usually found at depths of hundreds of meters to a few kilometers below the surface, where geological conditions have concentrated the gold into mineable ore bodies.
Alluvial gold is found in sedimentary deposits, typically in riverbeds or floodplains, where it has been eroded from its original source and accumulated over time. Deep reef gold, on the other hand, is extracted from hard rock formations deep underground, often requiring more complex mining techniques. While alluvial gold is generally easier to mine, deep reef gold deposits can be more substantial and require significant investment in technology and infrastructure for extraction.
The Homestake Mine is Located in Lead, SD. It started in the late 1800's and operated through the late 1990's. Barrick Gold, who owned the mine at the time of closure, handed the mine properties over to the State of South Dakota and the deep underground portions of the mine are currently being developed for a deep underground research laboratory (Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Lab).
Deep Gold was created on 2011-04-22.
South Africa is where it's at for deep mines. And what are they digging for? Gold! AngloGold Ashanti's Savuka mine near Carletonville is currently the world's deepest mine at just less than 3.8km below the surface. Gold Fields mines Driefontein will be the world's deepest mine at 4.1km below the surface and Kloof will be the second deepest mine at 4km underground when their extensions are complete. They're digging them now. At this stage AngloGold Mponeng mine is official the deepest mine in the world and the current project will take it another 300 meters deeper.
The miners dug deep into the ground and mined gold ore.
