In Antarctica -- and in the Arctic -- the term is thaw line, because in Antarctica the landscape is covered with an ice sheet -- 98% of it..

From Earth Science beta:

"According to "Permafrost, active-layer dynamics and periglacial environments of continental Antarctica" South African Journal of Science 98. pages 82-90:

  • Only 25% of Antarctica has permafrost, as the material beneath thick ice sheets is not permafrost.
  • The deepest permafrost occurs where there is no ice sheet.
  • The deepest permafrost in the Antarctic is about 1000m (3,280.84')."

Note as well, that the sub-glacial lakes, such as Lake Vostok, are apparently liquid because of their proximity to the Earth's core. The surface depth of Lake Vostok is -1,640' and its depth has been measured at 3,281'.
