Al Qaeda attacked the U.S. on 9/11 because it opposes U.S. foreign policy. Al Qaeda is a fundamentalist Islamic terrorist organization and opposes U.S. involvement in the Middle East and U.S. support for Israel. Al Qaeda was founded by Osama bin Laden, a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan War. It is possible he hoped to involve the U.S., like the Soviet Union, in a quagmire in Afghanistan.
