Achilles was not immortal. He died during just prior to the sacking of Troy, killed by an arrow to the heel shot by Paris and guided by Apollo.
His invulnerability - not immortality- was acquired as an infant when his mother, Thetis, dipped Achilles in the river Styx, holding him by the heel which did not gain invulnerability.
As a babe he was bathed in the river Styx by his mother, the immortal Nereid Thetis to rid him of his mortality; she was interrupted before she could bathe his heel (where she held him) and could not finish the task of making her son immortal, he became invulnerable save upon his heel; hence "Achilles heel".

Achilles was a hero in Ancient Greek mythology. His mother, the nymph Thetis, attempted to make Achilles immortal by dipping him into the river Styx. Achilles was killed because Paris, in the Trojan War, shot him with an arrow in Achilles' heel - Achilles' one weak spot. This is why the term "achilles heel" became an idiom for a person's one weakness.
