A mix of opportunity, determination, and great oratory.

The key to his leadership development was the Nazi party. He joined (around 1919) when it only had about a dozen active members. His exciting oratory helped to expand its membership, and he soon became the party's official leader. He proved to possess good organizational and political skills. He was also very good at what we would call "marketing" today. He built the party into a much larger and more dynamic organization, formed political alliances with other conservative and radical parties, and attracted important financial supporters. By 1933, when he was appointed Reich Chancelor, the Nazi party was the largest party in the Reichstag (national legislature). In important ways, Hitler created the Nazi party and the Nazi party created Hitler.
