Ahkenaten decided that all the Egyptians should worship one god, Aten, the god of the sun. So he demanded that all other gods were not to be worshiped. This of course had its problems because there were so many gods of ancient Egypt that it was very difficult to get rid of them all. He demanded all the shrines and temples to the other gods be destroyed. After his death though, Egypt went back to worshiping all their gods.

Akhenaten, or Amenhotep IV, abandoned the traditional Egyptian Polythiesm by introducing a type of worship described as monothiestic. He believed in worshipping only one god, which was a sun god, Aten. He succeded in changing the way ancient Egyptians worshipped during his reign, but after his death traditional religious practices were gradually restored. Akhenatan was a forgotton Pharaoh until the discovery of Armarna, a city which he built in honor of Aten, in the 19th century. Most records concering Akhenaten and his famly (King Tutankhamun, Nefertiti) were destroyed by later pharohs trying to erase Egypts so called "humiliating past". Some archives have been found receently that can give us more insight on Akhenaten and his family during his reign.

Akhenaten tried to change religion in Egypt by promoting the worship of a single deity, the sun disc known as Aten. He believed in a form of monotheism and sought to establish Aten as the supreme god, rejecting the traditional polytheistic beliefs of the time. Akhenaten's religious reforms were part of his efforts to centralize power and authority in his reign.
It is best to love anyone for who they are, rather than try and "change" them. That way lies disaster.
