Calgary was originally named Fort Brisebois by NWMP officer Éphrem Brisebois. The NWMP took a dim view of officers naming locations eponymously and it was renamed Fort Calgary in 1876 by Colonel James Macleod. Brisebois did have a street named after him in the City's northwest.
The name comes from Calgary on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. This somewhat fitting as the name comes from Norse words kald and gart meaning 'cold' and 'garden', which describes Calgary in the winter.
