Sonni Ali (or Sunni Ali Ber) was the first empire of the Songhai Empire in west Africa.
Ali Ber, an influential figure in Islamic history, is known for his principles of justice and equity. He treated those he conquered with a focus on fairness, often offering them the choice of conversion to Islam, while also ensuring their rights and properties were respected. His approach emphasized coexistence and protection for non-Muslims under his rule, aiming to integrate them into the Islamic community rather than subjugate them.
In the 1430s, the Taureg tribes took control of the city as the Mali Empire's power was diminishing. Then in 1462, Songhai ruler Sonni Ali Ber captured Timbuktu after defeating the Tuareg forces there. Ali Ber developed the city into a major trading city afterwards.
Sunni Ali died November 6, 1942 when his horse slipped & fell in the Koni River. He and the horse were overtaken by the waves & drown.

Sunni Ali Ber's treatment of the people of Timbuktu and Djenné differed significantly in terms of his approach to governance and religious tolerance. In Timbuktu, he was more accommodating, allowing the local scholars and merchants to maintain their customs and religious practices, which helped integrate the city into his empire. Conversely, in Djenné, he employed a more forceful approach, capturing the city and imposing his authority, which included the destruction of certain religious sites and a harsher treatment of its inhabitants. This difference reflected his broader strategy of consolidating power while navigating the diverse cultural landscapes of his empire.
