The US entered WW2 by declaring war on Japan after being attacked by the Japanese. Germany then declared war on the US. This freed the US from the strictures of being a neutral noncombatant and allowed the full force of the US Atlantic Fleet to participate in protecting the Atlantic supply convoys. Eventually this overwhelmed the German submarine capability.
