The Colonists thought they could win the Revolution by mostly hit and run ambush techniques. They would attack and defeat British armies in the field, then fade away into the countryside, assisted by their fellow Colonials. After many years of fighting the Colonists thought they could wear down the British until the English finally gave up and let them be a independent nation. That is basically what happened, although the Colonials did win the Battle of Saratoga, (which helped to bring in French assistance) and the Battle of Yorktown (with the help of the French army and navy). Finally, the British gave up and went back to England.
