Absolute flabbergasted surprise that those backward Russians could actually do such a thing in 1949. The earliest prediction was that they might have an atomic bomb in 1952 but many predicted that it was not possible for at least another decade.
The Soviets detonated their first device in '49. The US simply had to have a better weapon to counter it. The cold war was heating up (arm's race). The August 29, 1949 first device detonation was not dropped from an airplane! Like the US July 16, 1945 Trinity first device detonation, it was a tower shot. The Soviet Union's first atomic bomb that was actually dropped from an airplane did not occur until October 18, 1951 (their third atomic bomb test).

When the Soviet Union exploded an atomic bomb, the US response was to increase its own arsenal and its own testing of nuclear weapons.
The u.s had successfully tested the atomic bomb
The US .
They have a starter in a bomb and what this will do is shoot a neutron in the nuclear fuel starting a chain reaction

An atomic bomb is a bomb that releases a tremendous amount of energy by initiating a nuclear fission chain reaction.
Japan was negotiatin with the Soviet Union as the first atomic bomb was dropped.
The Rosenbergs were involved in the Manhattan Project which designed and made the first atomic bomb. They spied for the Soviet Union and passed the information to the Soviet Union on how to make an atomic bomb. They were caught and were executed for spying. With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the great value of their spying to the Soviet Atomic Bomb program was revealed.
