Amerigo Vespucci is believed to have died on February 22, 1512 of malaria. He was an Italian explorer, navigator and cartographer, whose name the Americas derived from the feminized Latin version of his first name. His name was given to North and South America because he was the first to recognize that it wasn't part of Asia. This led the mapmaker, Martin Waldseemuller, to consider him instead of Columbus, as the man who discovered America.
