Aminism:The belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenomena.

The Indians did not believe that the air, water, land, or natural objects and phenomena could be owned. They were all to be treated with respect as living spirits. If they killed a bison they gave thanks to its spirit and believed they had a responsibility to use every part of its body. The white concept of "ownership" was completely foreign.
