They drank a lot of water or sat in the shade. There were not many effective ways to keep cool in the Ancient Period. As a result, many Egyptians died of dehydration and heat stroke in those times. However, as the Egyptian lifespan was so short anyway, most people died of much simpler causes.
Egyptians had to, for the most part, just grin and bear it.
In Modern Egypt, people have all of the conveniences found in Western countries like fans and air conditioning. Fans are used more, though, since it costs much less to run and repair them.
