I am not very sure but I have heard that all the continents were once one big super-continent. So it probably looked liked a big mass of land. Again, I am so not sure about this but this is what I have learned.

There are no 'settlements' in Antarctica. There are, however, research stations. Most are unplanned with a collection of buildings established on an irregular basis to accommodate some scientific requirement.
There are various reasons that we should try and look after Antarctica. For example, if the ice sheet that covers 98% of Antarctica melts a lot then the sea level will rise.
