Mustafa Kemal became the First President of Turkey from 1923-1938 (when he died) and began to modernize the country in new and innovative ways, making the country more Westernized. Many Turks consider these improvements to have directly led to Turkish success as a country where most of the Islamic World is significantly poorer or sustained only by oil riches. he banned the fez, the traditional hat of the Turkish men, and required that they wear the European style hat. the Latin alphabet replaced the Arabic ones. the European calendars and metric system replaced the Islamic ones. woman were encourage to vote, work,and hold office. new laws made it illegal for woman to wear veils.
Men were forbidden to wear the Fez which is the cap they wear.
Women were forbidden to wear the veil which was an Islamic Custom.
