Baron Friedrich von Steuben was put in charge of training the raw troops at Valley Forge. He had introduced himself as a General officer in Prussia and volunteered to work without pay at training the soldiers. Later it was found out that he never made it higher than Captain; but he had done such a good job at training the soldiers and making them into an army that Washington made him a General in spite of his lower ranking.
At valley Forge, the Continental Army's trainer was named Baron Von Stueben. He was an imposter, neither a Baron or a General, but Washington didn't care. He did a good job, and Washington promoted him.
In the Revolution, he met General George Washington.
