How did Bella become a mermaid in h2o just add water?

50 years ago there were 3 other mermaids, and Lewis tracks down Max Hamilton, who knew the 3 original mermaids and was in love with Gracie. Gracie was the mermaid who lost the necklace that Emma found in the Moon Pool. Apparently, Gracie was Charlotte's grandmother, and Charlotte is obsessed with finding out everything she can about Gracie. Lewis discovers that Charlotte had been covering up the truth that her grandmother was a mermaid, and Charlotte leaves to find the Moon Pool. When she discovers it she too becomes a mermaid, and Emma, Rikki and Cleo grudgingly accept her but they make it clear that this relationship cannot last.
