He was marched off China Airlines flight 811 with Ronaldo Galman by soldiers under the Marcos regime (to which he was opposition leader), having landed at Manila International Airport on August 21st 1983, and both were shot dead on the runway by a man posing as an airport worker.
He had travelled to Manila in an effort to return to the Philippines, despite being fully aware of the possibility of immediate imprisonment or death at the hands of the regime he had vociferously denounced.
Historians and citizens of the Philippines consider the assassination the actions of the Marcos regime, and the behaviour of the soldiers affecting his arrest seems to support this; journalists and his aids and companions were held aboard the plane, while the time between shots would seem to suggest that no action was taken to stop the gunman. 25 military personnel and one civilian were ultimately acquitted in a brief investigation ordered by Marcos, who also attempted to implicate Galman (the other victim) in the murder.
The assassination is seen as the spark that united opposition to his authoritarian rule, bolstered the People Power Revolution, and led to Marcos eventually being forced to flee the country and concede power to Ninoy's widow, Corazon.
Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at the Manila Int'l Airport on August 21, 1983 after spending three years in exile with his wife, Cory, the future President of the country, and their children. He was shot from behind while on the tarmac guarded by military personnel. He dedicated his life fighting for the restoration of democracy in the Philippines during the Ferdinand Marcos Regime. To this day, no one exactly knows who shot him and who masterminded the assassination of one of the most famous Filipino freedom-fighters in modern times.
In August 21, 1983 Aquino was fatally shot in the head as he was escorted off the airplane. From the airplane, aviation security personnel were seen firing into the body of an unknown man dressed in blue, who was identified as Rolando Galman. Aquino's body was quickly loaded into a van and sped away.
Ninoy Aquino was shot at the back by an unknown gunman while deplaning at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
