By winning the Battle of Britain. Germany did not have a strong navy compared to Britain. They also did not have any specialised transport and landing craft for such an invasion. If they were going to get their troops across they would have to depend on already existing transport craft. In order to do that succasfully they had to have complete control of the skies over the channel in order to protect the slow and unarmed transports. Because they were unable to destroy the British air force it was impossible for them to even try to invade. Michael Montagne

1. in the sea: Germany used U boats (submarines) to sink supply ships bringing ammo and food- it was successful at first, but it failed when ships started traveling in convoys. Germany could not counter the convoys since its navy was no match for Britain's

2. in the air: the Luftwaffe bombers attacked key airfields and air command centers This was supposed to weaken the RAF before the Luftwaffe fighters were deployed to defeat them completely and achieve total air superiority over Britain - successful at first, but failed because the Germans suddenly changed tactics and started bombing cities instead of airfields. This gave the RAF a crucial window of time to recuperate from the attacks, replace its losses, etc.

The Battle of Britain - When the Luftwaffe fighters came to 'finish off' the RAF, the RAF were ready for them and defeated the Luftwaffe.

3. on land: the invasion force was never deployed since the air and sea campaigns failed.

Well there was the battle of Britain, where the RAF stood up to the Lufftwaffe and caused much heavier losses than the Germans anticipated.

There was also the Royal Navy, which at the time was the largest in the world and the German navy was only really good at killing innocent merchant sailors (sounds catty but it's true).

But their was also the mis-direction campaign, where they managed to convince the Germans that the Army was a great deal larger and better organised than they really were.

Many feel that Britain got lucky when Hitler chose to break off Operation Sealion and instead go after Russia but this is not the case. For one, Britain defended their own borbers, as I have said above. Secondly Hitler hated the Russians and always planned to invade them.

They sat on their island and let the Soviet Union do most of the fighting.

Seriously though, that's an overly simplistic summary of it. Germany was unable to defeat Britain's navy and air force, so the British Isles were safe from invasion; but the British military wasn't strong enough to invade German-held Europe on its own, so the two combatants stood at an impasse.

Eventually Germany turned its attention away, and attacked the Soviet Union. While initially very successful, the powerful Red Army eventually ground down and destroyed much of the German military- at great cost. The Soviets inflicted severe defeats at Stalingrad, Leningrad and Kursk before British (and American) troops ever really set foot upon European soil (in Italy in late 1943).

By the time the Americans, Brits, and everyone else invaded Normandy in June 1944, the Soviets were pushing the Germans back to Poland, and ten months later, the Red Army captured Berlin, ending the war.

I don't intend to downplay British (as well as American and other countries') contributions- they certainly helped! British forces in Egypt helped prevent German troops from capturing the Middle East and its valuable oil reserves; they were able to hold off General Rommel's forces long enough for reinforcements to cross from Morocco to help drive Rommel back to Europe. British and American air forces dominated the skies over German-held Europe, crippling German industry and preventing the manufacturing of tanks and other weapons. When the Allies landed in Normandy in summer 1944, they opened up the second front that the Russians desperately wanted/needed, forcing Germany to split their military forces and making it a little easier to defeat them.

They had searchlights and anti-aircraft guns to use against air attacks. After a few months they also had night fighters that attacked German bombers.

He already bombed them and took out their navy but the Soviets and Americans caught up to him before he made an invasion, but because they were so close only luck kept him from taking over.
