4 September 1939 because New Zealand was one of the first countries to be involved in the global conflict precipitated by Germany's invasion of Poland on 1 Sept. It was a consequence of Britain's defence pact with Poland, and consequent war declaration on the 3 Sept, and many British commonwealth countries were of course directly affected.
Historians generally accept that the war began on 1 September, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In response to this bold move, the French, Great Britain, and most of her commonwealths (ie; Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) declared war on Germany.

The Australian government declared war on Japan Germany and Italy because they're part of the British Commonwealth, the declared war when Britain did. This also applied to New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and India, to name the bigger countries in the Commonwealth.
The US did not declare war on Germany. Germany declared war on the US shortly after the Japanese attack on Hawaii.
The USA did not have to declare war on Germany because Adolf Hitler declared war on the USA.

New Zealand was part of the British Empire. Britain delcared war on Germany in August 1914. New Zealand, along with Australia participated vastly in the Balkins Campaign in Galipoli.
