Depends on what you mean by "the perfect typewriter".Sholes build many prototypes for his typewriter before it was released in the public.The first version (and the first appearance of the dreaded QWERTY keyboard layout) had type bars behind the paper, so people couldn't see what they typed.The later version had type bars in front of the paper that sprang back with springs, which is basically the typewriter as we know now.(Interesting fact is, Sholes actually tried to change the QWERTY layout into something more logical, but the manufacturer declined that change!)
