It would be simplest to say that she took her father's throne.

However succession to power wasn't all that simple back then.

Her father (Ptolemy XII) was king of Egypt. He made her joint regent with him when she was 14. When he died (51 BCE) she (at 18) and her 12 year old brother Ptolemy XIII became joint rulers.

She then married her brother and started to bump him out of any real power.

Then there was a rebellion and Ptolemy XIII took over to become sole ruler in 48 BCE.

Then Cleopatra rebelled against him - but failed and had to flee Egypt.

She came back to the palace at the time that Julius Caesar was there and Caesar, after a war, established her on the throne in 47 BC.
