Saints Cyril and Methodius missionaries to the Slavic people are credited with developing the Glagolitic alphabet, (later developed into the Cyrilic alphabet in use today) bringing the Liturgy and Word of God to the Slavic people.
Answer: Western Slavs, unlike the other two groups, are Roman Catholic. They also use the Roman alphabet while eastern and southern Slavs (with the exception of Slovenes, Croats, and Bosniaks) use the Cyrillic alphabet.
The Cyrillic alphabet was created in the 9th century by St. Cyril and St. Methodius, two Byzantine Christian theologians, to translate religious texts into the Slavic languages spoken by the Slavic peoples in the Balkans. It was specifically designed to help spread Christianity and literacy among the Slavic-speaking populations.

Cyril and Methodius were 9th-century Byzantine brothers and missionaries known for their efforts to spread Christianity among the Slavic peoples. They created the Glagolitic alphabet, the precursor to the Cyrillic script, which allowed Slavs to read and write in their own language. Their work facilitated the translation of religious texts and the establishment of a Slavic liturgy, fostering literacy and cultural identity among the Slavs. This laid the groundwork for the development of Slavic nations and their integration into the Christian world.

One of the main and most revealing differences between Catholic and Eastern Orthodox missionary work is the use of the vernacular language. The best illustration of this can be seen in the misionary work carried out by both German (catholic) and Greek missionaries among the Slavs. You are certainly aware that the Slavs encompass Russians, Bulgarians, Serbs, Croatians, Poles, Czechs, etc. Note that the last three use the Latin alphabet, while the former three use their own alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic script was devised by the two Greek missionaries Cyril and Methodius during their work in Moravia, or modern Czechoslovakia. The goal was to make the Gospels and the liturgy available in the people's language, so that they could understand. This concept, together with Orthodoxy and the Cyrillic script, came to be used among the Russians, Serbs, and other Slavs who adopted Orthodoxy. The others, however, including Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Croatia, had to adopt the 'Roman way,' and so had to use the Latin script and language, even if this meant that the people could not understand. This is the main difference between Orthodox and Catholic missionnary work.
