The kingdom of Portugal was founded in the year 868 but the conventional date for its independence is 1139 by D. Afonso Henriques aka Afonso I of Portugal, but only in 1143 it was recognized as an independent kingdom.

Ever since 1139, except from 1581 until 1640. In 1139 it got the independence from Castilla. The first king of Portugal was D. Afonso Henriques (his mother was the queen of Castilla) Then from 1581 to 1640, took place the Iberian Union, with one single king to the entire Iberian Peninsula. In 1640 got the independence again, after Spain tried to get to much power of the Portuguese territories (from Brazil to Timor, including Portuguese mainland, Azores, Madeira, most of Africa, India, ...)
Portugal used to be a city of the kingdom of Castella (spain) but there was a french knight that the king of Castella send to castella to help in the war against the moors and that knight D.Henrique had a great performance so the king gave him the county of Portu Cale and his daughter D. Teresa to marry and he said that every lands he conquer to the moors he can add to his county. D. Henrique Conquer many lands and he asked for independence but the king didn't gave him . Portugal's independence was got in 1143 with the Tratado de Zamora (Treaty of Zamora).
People have been inhabiting Lisbon's region as soon as 8000BC, and from that time on until the year 1147 A.D. it was conquered and inhabited by a few other civilizations. At 1147 it was final conquered by the portuguese, and became oficially part of the portuguese territory.
