Dalton added to the atomic theory of Democritus. Daltons four main ideas were;

1). Compuonds join atoms.

2). All elements are composed of atoms.

3). Atoms of different elements are different by their mass.

4). All atoms of elements are exactly the same and have the same mass.

Dalton also came up with a list of chemical symbols and began to put them into a table.

Atoms are indestructible
Democritus was a Greek philosopher who lived more than two thousand years ago. He proposed that all matter was made up of tiny indivisible particles, which he called "atomos," which means indivisible. That's about as far as he got with though. John Dalton, the early 1800's, went a bit further with it, developing his atomic theory that each element is made of a different type of atom, and that compounds form by atoms bonding with each other in whole number ratios.

· All atoms of a given element are identical. · The atoms of a given element are different from those of any other element. · Atoms of one element can combine with atoms of other elements to form compounds. · A given compound always has the same relative numbers of types of atoms.
