Actually, December got its name because it was the tenthmonth in the old Roman ten month calendar. The Latin cardinal number for ten is decem. The month was named after the number, not the other way round. The Latin for seven is septem; for eight, octo; for ninth, novem. The first month, January, was named for the God Janus, whose head looked both forward and backward. The original ten month calendar began with the vernal equinox and did not include 61 days of winter.

The are an amazing number of things in the western world which come to us through Rome. 'Mile', for example, is derived from the Latin for 'thousand', the number of steps Roman soldiers were trained to make in a set distance in exact simultaneous order in precise close formation. The Latin number 'decem' was derived from earlier languages, passing from Sanskrit through Greek to Latin, and even to English as 'decade'.

How come December is the 12th month and not the 10th month?

As the name indicate "DECEMBER" came from the word "Deca" so it must be tenth month but it is not.Similarly this condition is with other months also such as "SEPTEMBER","OCTOBER","NOVEMBER".This is because in past centuries, there were ten months and December was the tenth month as it is the last month but then few years later two more months were added in the year that were June and July that were placed in 6th and7th position therefore the arrangement of some months like December was changed and December was placed in 12th position.because I said so

Why is October the 10 month instead of the 8 month?

In the early Roman calendar there were only 10 months in the year with October being the 8th month and December being the 10th and final month of the year. It was Julius Caesar who introduced two more months in the year which was known as the Julian Calendar thus making October the 10th month of the year and December then became the 12th and final month of the year.
