If you are wondering why Trump WANTED to become president - you'd have to wade through all his rhetoric, campaign speeches, stories from people who know him, etc. to try to discern his motivations. Note that one thing that is well known about him from the way he has run his business operations is that he prefers to keep people guessing what he is thinking in order to keep them off balance and give himself an advantage in negotiations and maneuvering. With that in mind it may be essentially impossible to know why he wanted to be president.

There are two primary reasons that Donald Trump won the election:

  • Donald Trump was able to galvanize the White Uneducated population to vote for him, directly citing their particular grievances over the losses of economic livelihood, security against terrorism, burdensome regulation, and identity politics which faults them for all evil in America. Since this population is quite large in the Midwest, where there are a number of swing states, this proved critical in getting him the right votes in the right places.
  • Hillary Clinton was unable to get 4 million Obama voters to come out and vote at all and lost 3 million Obama voters to Trump (for reason 1) for a total deficit of 7 million votes. In many cases, Donald Trump beat Clinton with fewer votes than Romney had in 2012 because a significantly fewer number of people chose not to vote for Clinton. The perception that Hillary was an elitist, a criminal, and a disingenuous person failed to excite those 7 million voters who would have led to a Hillary victory. In fact, because of the numbers, it makes far more sense to see the election as a referendum on Hillary Clinton than an actual support of Donald Trump.

Trump won by winning a majority of votes in the electoral college. Apparently he won by appealing to people who were disenchanted with the federal government and believed that he would bring jobs back to America, restrict imports and shut off illegal Immigration. He was helped by running against a woman who had a long record of apparently corrupt transaction and lying. I think many voters decided he was the better of two bad choices.
