They didn't, the shield wall broke itself by following what they thought were routing troops. They were subsequently turned upon.

the 3 main reasons are: 1. William had better tackticks then Harold 2. Harold had to leave half of his army behind 3. when harolds army saw the haleys commet the thought is was bad luck so when the turrend to see the commet Williams army took the chance and struck harolds team
During the Battle of Hastings William's army (Normans) was at a standstill as Harold's army (English) had a strong shield wall witch was almost impossible to break. Instead William had a plan, find out there weakness! On two occasions his left wing had broken and the English chased after it. When the Normans regained control the English barely made it back to their own line in time to reform the shield wall. Observing this, William ordered an acted retreat to draw the English out yet again and this time catch them in the open. He used this tactic to successfully perform this 3 times. This was his trick.
NO. William (the Conqueror) did not die at the Battle of Hastings, but became the first of the Norman Kings of England. He was crowned King at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1066. However, his opponent, King Harold did die at Hastings.
The Saxons built a shield wall along Senlac Hill so no matter how much they tried, the Normans could not break through. Finally, the Normans pretended to retreat to lure the Saxons after them so that there would be a hole in the shield wall. After this, legend says that the Saxons were killed and King Harold was shot in the eye by an arrow. This was as the Normans were shooting arrows into the air, targeting for the faces!

actually there are four shields : the wooden shield (will burn and break) this is the first shield they have at the bazaar. once you complete the first dungeon, the iron shield will be available at the bazaar in skyloft (will shock you and break). after that is the sacred shield (will NOT shock or burn and repairs itself) but then there's the Hylian shield that you receive from the thunder dragon you have to redefeat 8 of the 9 bosses and it will never break
