Edith Piaf died of an internal hemorrhage on 10 October 1963 at Plascassier, near Grasse. Because she had wanted to die in Paris, her husband Theo Sarapo had her conveyed there by ambulance, overnight, and the news flash went out early the next morning, the 11th, which is always celebrated by fans as "Piaf Day". Her great friend Jean Cocteau immediately set about composing a eulogy to be read out on the radio that same afternoon, and died of a heart attack whilst doing so.
