Edmund Hillary was 16 years old when he became interested in climbing during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu.

He was knighted not only for being the first person the climb mt Everest, but for his work in helping the local people in Nepal called sherpas. He helped start up the himalayn trust, to help the sherpas. The trust helped to provide homes, medical care, education, and much much more.
The British Mount Everest expedition that Edmund Hillary was a member of reached base camp on the 12th April 1953. They would have rested for a few days before starting on there climb of the mountain.
Edmund Hillary began his exploration career in the early 1950s, with his most notable expedition occurring in 1953 when he successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest alongside Tenzing Norgay. Prior to this, he participated in various Antarctic expeditions in the late 1940s and early 1950s, which helped to shape his skills and passion for exploration. Hillary's achievements in mountaineering and exploration made him a prominent figure in the field.
Sir Edmund Hillary, along with Tenzing Norgay, started their expedition up Mt. Everest from the south side in Nepal. They began their journey in the town of Lukla, which served as a base for their trek to Everest Base Camp. From there, they ascended towards the mountain, ultimately reaching the summit on May 29, 1953.
