In each case, the North and England's industrial base was far greater than the American colonies and the North's were superior to the South in industry. In each case the idea was not to overthrow their "enemies" but to become independent. Also, taking a legalistic point of view, whether a person was pro-slavery, anti-slavery or indifferent to it, the US Supreme Court ruled it was legal. So a Southern view was that since the Supreme Court was on their "side", why was the North "on their backs" over it. Also, as in the American Revolution, England had a strong army just as the North had a strong army compared to the South. ( Southern victories yes, but long term no )
