Santa was traditionally dressed in green. His switch to red came in the 1930s through a linkage to Coca Cola.


Father Xmas = Saint Nicolas, who gave toys to young children. He wore red to signify Christ's blood, and white so signify the purity of God.

At least that's what they said in Sunday school.
