After the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, the German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, tried to make sure that France did not have any allies. Germany allied with Russia, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Bismark was not successful at making Great Britain an ally. When Bismark built up a large navy, this angered Great Britain and some of his allies. He also favored Austria-Hungary over Russia which angered Russia.
