This is an old question to which there is no clear answer. To Christian apologists God is outside of space and time and causation and therefore needs no creator. Those who don't believe in God say that if one needs a god (a designer) to explain the world, then one needs a designer to explain the god.

God was not created - he was simply there.

Catholic Answer

The 4th Lateran Council and the First Vatican Council both attribute to God "eternal". That is, God possess the Divine Being without beginning and without end. God simply is, as the first answer puts it, He has no time, no before, no after, no succession, and is absolutely without mutability (no change). Or as one of our great philosophers once put it, God is the uncreated Creator.

The Bible only tells us things like, "And God said, "Let there be light" and there was light." So it is possible God just spoke it into being. There are no other details on how He created it.

The ancients often considered the earth to be pre-existing and their creation stories tell of what happened next. So it is with the creation stories in the Book of Genesis. Many experts in the Hebrew language have examined the text and come to the conclusion that when God began to create, the earth was already there. As long ago as the eleventh century CE, the influential Jewish scholar, Rashi, said that Genesis 1:1 should be read, "When God began to create" or "In the beginning of God's creation ".

Genesis 1:1 to 2:4a ( up to first sentence of 2:4) says there was a pre-existing watery chaos. The ocean was already present and a wind moved across the surface. The seas rested on the dry land, which appeared on day 3 when God gathered the waters together. The second creation story, beginning in Genesis 2:4b says that the dry land was already there, but plants had not yet grown because God had not caused it to rain. In neither case, according to many biblical experts, does it say that God created the earth itself.

Additional Comments:

The Book of Genesis begins with the 'reign of man' and not the initial Creation - rather the 'renewal' of the fallen Earth and re-positioning of the sun and moon. If one reads the first few verses, they will soon realize the Earth is already formed but in total darkness and under water. No human was present when God created the physical Universe which contains the Earth:

Job 38:4-7 New King James Version (NKJV)

4 "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Tell Me, if you have understanding.

5 Who determined its measurements?

Surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it?

6 To what were its foundations fastened?

Or who laid its cornerstone,

7 When the morning stars sang together,

And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Another answer:

The earth, the universe and everything in it is "made of MATTER." As science defines it, "matter has weight and occupies space." All science can do is tell us "what matter is"... not "HOW it's made."

That's because all matter, regardless of its mass and density, BURNS at different given temperatures. FIRE is "energy" and ENERGY is "spirit" [which is invisible to the naked human eye]. Therefore... MATTER is composed of compacted energy -- SPIRIT!

We're told that: "God is a Spirit..." (John 4:24 KJV).

So God used that which He possesses in abundance, spirit, to create MATTER -- the earth, the universe and everything in it. Yet, while we can know WHAT God used to create the universe -- SPIRIT -- neither our finite human minds nor all of our technological advances can say HOW God did it.

Man can take that which God has made -- matter -- and create things with it. But man cannot make "new matter." Nor is "new matter" being created by God, today. In fact, the universe as we know it, is "running down!" It's dying.

This points to a definite TIME in the past when the universe BEGAN!

No matter how much he likes to pretend he's God... man just doesn't have all the answers. All he can do is witness the universe around him, marvel at it... and "believe" what he wants to, as to HOW it all came about -- by many cosmic accidents repeated over eons beyond his wildest imagination; or by a Designing, Creative Power beyond his wildest imagination. A "Spirit Power" that he still can't explain to the satisfaction of all, because it can't be seen with the human eye. Yet, a Spirit Power that he can't deny, because he can "see what it does."

God created the earth from SPIRIT... compacted energy. But, no one can explain HOW God did it.

Jewish tradition is that God created the universe out of nothing (Exodus 20:11, Isaiah 40:28; Rashi commentary to Genesis 1:14; Maimonides' "Guide," 2:30). Nachmanides on Gen. 1:1 states emphatically that this is a fundamental Jewish tradition. Note that the Torah, in describing the Creation, deliberately employs brevity and ellipsis, just as it does in many other topics. See the Talmud, Hagigah 11b.

On day 1: God created the universe in general, light, and this Earth. The light was not the same as that of the sun.

On day 2: God created the separation between the Earth and the upper atmosphere.

On day 3: God separated the continents from the oceans, and created plants.

On day 4: God created the sun, moon, and stars.

On day 5: God created birds and fish.

On day 6: God created animals and people.

On day 7: God ceased creating, thereby creating the concept of rest.

Note that according to tradition, there is only one Genesis creation-narrative, with ch.2 serving as an expansion of the brevity of ch.1, not a separate set of events (Rashi commentary, Gen. 2:8).

While Judaism has always seen the Torah as an intricate tapestry that nonetheless had one Divine source, some modern authors such as Wellhausen (the father of modern Biblical-criticism, 1844-1918) have suggested artificially chopping up the narrative and attributing it to various authors, despite the Torah's explicit statement as to its provenance (Exodus 24:12, Deuteronomy 31:24).

No fragments have ever been found that would support his Documentary Hypothesis, which remains nothing more than an arbitrary claim:Debunking the JEPD Documentary Hypothesis

Can you love God without knowing Him?

God cannot be known. God has to be realized and we can love God when we start our journey with God. It starts with believing in God, having faith in God, then having hope, trust and living with enthusiasm. When we realize God is everywhere, when we see God in a little flower, in a singing bird, when we see God in you and me, then we don't have to know God because God is in everything, God is everywhere. God cannot be defined, God cannot be known, we cannot find God, we have to realize God and the way to realize God is to love God, is to yearn for God more than you yearn for your beloved, for gold, for anything and anybody. When we yearn for God, then we realize God, we will become one with God.
