because he wanted a divorce too Anne Bolyn who was to old to have a baby so he divorced her but the pope of his religion wouldn't let him so he set up his own church and religion witch he called the church of England. Later he re married and had a son to take over him when he died.
It depends how you look at it. Henry was a Catholic until the Pope refused to grant Henry a divorce. So Henry set up his own church, the Church of England, with Henry being in charge of it.
Henry VIII wanted to break with Rome, but not the Catholic religion. The Church in England, at least during Henry's reign, remained Catholic in theology and liturgy. After the break and until Henry's death, the Protestant religion was still illegal in England.
