J.K. Rowling completed the first draft of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1995. She then hired literacy agent, Christopher Little, who sent the book to several publishing houses in the UK, twelve of which rejected the manuscript.
A year later, the eight year old daughter of Bloomsbury's chief executive was given the first chapter to read, and immediately demanded the rest. Bloomsbury then agreed to publish the book and it was released on the 26th June 1997 in the UK.
On the 1st September 1998, it was published in the US under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
