Jackson's defeat in 1824 led to the creation of national parties and the political awakening of the western frontier and the more recent immigrants. He helped form a national party which put him in office in 1828. His party was soon countered by a national opposition party, the Whigs. The US has had two national parties ever since. Jackson also forwarded the spoils system which was an important part of politics until Civil Service began in 1887.
