Canadian archaeologists recently confirmed the location of Cartier's "Charlesbourg-Royal" as being at Cap Rouge, Québec. There, 400 people survived the winter despite the cold weather and Indian attacks

He studied cartography, navigation, astronomy, math, and seamanship. He learned about sailing and he started to like it through school. He was married to Catherine Des Granches. But they had no children. She was the daughter of Jacques Des Granches a chevalier du roi. He was a constable of Saint-Malo. He went on his first voyage on April 20, 1534. He sailed with two ships and 61 men. He arrived 20 days later. He was sent by King Francis I to the New World in search of riches and he was searching for a passage way through or around North America to East Asia.
