Saw steam rise out of a kettle, and thought that power could be put to use.

NO.. That is a myth. James Watt did not invent the steam-engine but realised why the existing engines, which could only drive reciprocating mine-drainage pumps anyway, were so dreadfully inefficient. He devised the appropriate solution; and later was among those who developed the engine into a rotative form so it could drive a wide range of factory machinery.

James Watt did not invent the steam train. The steam train was developed by George Stephenson in 1814. James Watt did, however, pioneer improvements to the steam engine, which eventually led to the development of steam-powered locomotives.
James Watt's invention was the steam engine but more improved.

James Watt (1736-1819) is credited with the 1765 improvement of the steam engines of Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729), which dated from 1712. The efficiency of the Watt engine led to its wide industrial use after Watt partnered with Matthew Boulton in 1775.
