Well, the japaneseians were wanting to trade for paper and stuff so then they can make moar anime and manga so they decided to trade with Europe and several other countries, but when Japan found out that europe was converting shizzle they decided to close there doors and they were like oh heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell no your guna convert out cultures and shiz! and then they stayed like that for like 200 years then it was the modern age and then modernized and shizzle

We are currently learning this in grade 8 social studies. Japan thought that there were too many bad foreigners coming into their country. They also hated the idea that other people were stealing their ideas and making them slightly better. Japan was always further ahead than the rest of the world technology wise and they thought that they would get even further ahead while they are isolated then win back their technology credit.
