Abraham Lincoln
By death. Lincoln was assassinated before the end of his term by John Wilkes Booth.
He thought Lincoln didn't want to end slavery.
John Wilkes Booth killed him the same week that General Lee surrendered.
Because of his views on slavery, Abraham Lincoln inspired both passionate supporters and equally vehement detractors. John Wilkes Booth despised Lincoln's desire to end slavery; Booth supported the Confederacy. After he assassinated Lincoln, Booth was surprised that the public opposed what he had done. He expected to be regarded as a hero.He hoped to revive the spirit of the South and continue the War of Northern Agression.John Wilkes Booth originally planned to kidnap Lincoln but then decided to shoot him.
John Wilkes Booth was part of a Southern conspiracy to kidnap or kill Northern leaders, including Abraham Lincoln. On April 14, 1865, Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln, at Ford's Theater in Washington DC and Lincoln died nine hours later, at 7:22am, on April 15, 1865. Booth was pursued, and was found and shot 11 days later. (see related link)
President Lincoln was unable to do anything after the Civil War because he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth FIVE days after the Civil War ended.
John W. Booth thought he was a tyrant. After he shot Lincoln, he jumped on the stage and yelled "sic semper tyrannis" (thus always to tyrants). Did you know that there is theory that Booth was never actually killed? Booth was from the South, and did not agree with Lincoln's views on slavery, and that all men are created equal.
My understanding is that there was some dialogue prior to Booth being shot. He refused to come out and said that he would shoot anyone that tried to take him. I believe that it was his intention to fight to the end. When he was paralyzed he looked and his hands and said; "Useless, useless!"
Booth thought the civil war would restart and the south would win. In his diary he writes about how he felt that the south would support and hide him. He was wrong about it all. Not only did they turn him in but mourned the president.
He was most known for his opposition to slavery. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to end it. Many people didn't like that he ended slavery, so John Wilkes Booth shot him at Ford's Theater.
