God sent him on ahead to Egypt to prepare the food for the family and the nation of Egypt for the coming famine. Other nations also benefited from this. The circumstances of this going to Egypt was rather unique, looking like it was a bad thing since Joseph was sold into slavery there, but God's plan prevailed as it always does. See Romans 8:28: "For we know that God causes all things to work for the good of those who love him and called according to his purpose." That is a promise we can hang onto. Therefore we should refrain from judging a situation until we see what happens next.

Because Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, they sold him into slavery, which brought him to Egypt. Through a series of events that you can read about in Genesis 39 - 41, Joseph was able to interpret two dreams that the Pharaoh had. Those two dreams predicted seven years of plenty followed by seven years of great famine. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of storing up food during the seven years of plenty and then later was in charge of distribution during the famine. The area that Joseph's family was living was affected by the famine as well, and so the brothers traveled to Egypt to purchase food, and it was while making the purchase that Joseph and his brothers were reunited. If Joseph hadn't ended up in Egypt in front of the Pharaoh, no one would have known that the seven years of famine were coming and the seven years of plenty would have been wasted. Therefore, Joseph's family would have starved for lack of food during the famine.

Why was Joseph smith inspired to pray to god?

I assume you are referring to the prayer that brought about his first vision? Joseph Smith was trying to find a church to join and turned to the Bible for answers. He read James 1:5, which says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." That phrase really struck him, so he decided he would ask God which church to join.

What is the story in the Bible that's tells us we need God in our life?

Many stories in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, show us we need God in our lives. Maybe the story of Joseph is a good one. In Genesis chapters 30 - 50 you can read about Joseph. Joseph was sold by his brothers and taken to Egypt to be a slave. But God was with him and God made Joseph prosper in spite of the circumstances Joseph found himself in. Joseph became second in charge over all of Egypt
