They did so in order to disperse the crowd so that Julius Caesar is not motivated or become high-headed on seeing so many of his supporters.

The Senate bestowed on him the powers of a dictator. At this point in Rome's history, Caesar as dictator ended all hopes of a return to the days of Rome's republic. As the dictator, Caesar was able to make political changes to Rome without the approval of any other part of Rome's government.
