The Labor party won a majority government in the 2007 Australian federal election by winning 83 of 150 seats in the House of Commons. On 29 November 2007, the Labor caucus met and confirmed Rudd, the party leader as the Prime Minister, succeeding Liberal Party leader John Howard, who was defeated in his own division.

Kevin Rudd was deposed in a leadership spill by his deputy, Julia Gillard, in June 2010, after he lost te support of his party for various reasons. Gillard then went on to remain Prime Minister following the federal election in September of that year, by securing the support of the key Independents in an otherwise hung parliament. In June 2013, Kevin Rudd - whose loss of power was never really accepted by many members of the public - returned to power after Gillard's party lost faith in her ability to lead them successfully to the next Federal election, and held a vote to determine who would be the leader of e Labor Party. Kevin RudWinona by a considerable majority.
