The Current Canadian Flag was 'invented' during the minority government of Lester B. Pearson.
He proposed the idea and all of Canada sent in 3000 designs to parliament to be voted on. Then parliament narrowed it down to 3 designs. Pearson wanted the 'Pearson Pennant Flag' which had blue and 3 maple leafs. Quebec wanted it with a Quebec symbol. But Parliament chose the flag we have today. SO HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CREATION OF THE CANADIAN FLAG.
George Stanley and John Matheson are creditted as the flag's creators. They would have created the flag between 1964 (when Lester B. Pearson began to address the issue of the flag) and 1965 (when their design was adopted by the country).
In 1964, Lester B. Pearson began a heated debate over the changing of the Canadian flag. He purposed a contest in which Canadians could submit possible designs for the flag and a final flag would be chosen from them. Hundreds of designs were submitted, and on February 15, 1965 the current version of the flag was chosen.

He invented the Canadian healthcare system, their student loan system, the Canadian flag, the Canada Pension Plan, the Order of Canada, got rid of capital punishment in Canada, and won the Nobel Peace Prize for setting up the UN Emergency Force to resolve the Suez Canal Crisis. He was a very impressive man, and has many things named for him.
The Nobel Peace Prize 1957 was awarded to Lester Bowles Pearson.
In 1961. the leader of the Opposition Party, Lester Pearson, proposed the idea for a new flag. Lester just proposed the idea, several others were part of the new flag.
Lester Pearson actually favoured the design shown which became known as the "Pearson pennant."
The previous flag was the "Canadian Red Ensign" which had a Union Jack in the top left corner. In 1961, the leader of the Liberal Party, Lester Pearson, asked if there could be a new flag. He asked because the Liberals base, Quebec, didn't like the Union Jack on the flag. In 1963, Lester was the Prime Minister of Canada. He proposed to government of a new flag. Later George Stanley and J. R. Matheson came up with a design that was chosen.
