If you think of it it may be Marco Polo, that is the one that made the contact after several hundreds years, the mongols have on the other side contacted the Europeans by invading and plunder. and then agen I believe if it is the culture (when the Europeans learned about it) that was Marco Polo. when he traveled to China, common knowledge. but we never really lost the contact, cause of the silk road, where silk was transported trough the continent in caravans. of course the owner of the goods was changed on the road. so my conclusion must be Marco Polo. of course he was sett in jail cause they believed he was lying.^^
