Martin Luther King vehemently protested and formed a new branch of the Christian religion called Protestantism. He publicly denounced the Church (which became the Roman Catholic Church) by nailing his 'theses' - a list of complaints against the Church, especially with regard to corruption within the church, to the church door at Wittenberg, Germany.
Martin Luther took steps to show the Catholic Church the error of their ways. He nailed a letter on the door however, he did not renounce his position as "priest". He died a Catholic priest in spite of his convictions.

Early reformers actually reformed the Church, Martin Luther did not reform the Church, he apostatized and took others into heresy with him. Early reformers started by reforming their own lives, great saints like St. Catherine of Siena, who almost single handedly ended the Western Schism were extremely humble before God, practiced the virtues and were graced by God. Martin Luther was anything but a great saint, by his own words, he sinned and sinned "greatly" to show that he was already saved.
